Health Careers Exploration Experience

Health Sciences Programs at Indian Hills

OTTUMWA --- Applications are now available for the 2018 Health Career Exploration Experience jointly sponsored by Indian Hills Community College and the Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation. The Health Career Exploration Academy is open to high school students who will be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2108 and who have an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. The goal of the program is to help students choose or solidify a healthcare career area as well as understand the many processes related to finding, financing and achieving the education needed for that career. The program hopes to prepare and energize students for healthcare careers regardless of where they choose to go to college.

Both Indian Hills and the Legacy Foundation understand the acute need that exists in Southeast Iowa for dozens of different types of healthcare providers including doctors, nurse practitioners, and occupational therapists, to name a few.

The academy will allow students to participate in a week-long program held at Indian Hills July 24-28 with additional dates of August 2 and 9. During the program students will take part in a wide range of activities including a variety of hands-on experiences with medical procedures and equipment, speaking with current healthcare professionals and students about their career paths, and investigating college programs and career pathways for various healthcare professions.  Among the other activities during the experience will be financial aid workshops, finding and applying for scholarships, and taking field trips to area universities/medical schools.

Funded by the Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation and supported by Indian Hills, there is no cost to the participants in this program. Students who successfully complete it will receive three semester hours of college credit. Participants must apply to be in the program and applications should be returned by June 25.
