Skill–Building courses are available through the Indian Hills Academic Success Center on both the Ottumwa and Centerville campuses. These courses are designed to increase your confidence and abilities in subjects where you may need some extra help, whether you are preparing to enter one of our academic programs or are already taking courses.
Courses are offered to help you improve your reading, writing, and math. We also have courses for speed–reading, orientation to college, study skills, preparation for advanced mathematics, comprehensive writing skills, English Language Learning (ELL), and many other areas.
The ACCUPLACER test can help measure your skill levels in reading, writing, and math, giving you the information you need when deciding whether you are ready for an advanced course or need to refresh your knowledge by taking a Skill–Building course. The ACCUPLACER test is provided as a free service and can be taken at the Ottumwa and Centerville campuses, or at any of the five County Service Centers. More information about the COMPASS test is provided as part of the Indian Hills Admission Process or you may contact the Testing Center.

English Language Learning Center (ELL)
We hope you will visit our new English Language Learning Center, located on the Main Campus, above the Library in the LRCO 200. We offer English Language Learners (ELL) classes for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students. In addition, we offer Citizenship classes and tutoring services. All classes, tutoring services, and instructional materials are free of charge. Our ELL Center is equipped with a computer lab and a printer, which are available to all students during business hours. Also, we offer ELL classes in Fairfield, Oskaloosa, and at JBS for employees.
