Indian Hills Insight: How the College Helps English Learners
Some of the international students enrolled at the Indian Hills Community College campuses in Ottumwa and Centerville came to IHCC with a degree of proficiency in the English language. The majority, however, require the help they are able to receive at the English Language Learning Center at the college. Those are not the only students who take advantage of the services offered at the Center, though. It also acts as a resource for many other non-English speaking students and community members.

Indian Hills Insight: Dental
When the Rural Health Education Center was built on the Indian Hills Community College Ottumwa campus in 2006-07, extra space was included that planners hoped would one day house new dental programs at the college. That vision came true a half-dozen years later when a $750,000 dental clinic was opened for simulation lab and clinical experience.

With rising post-secondary education costs nationwide, officials at Indian Hills Community College are like their counterparts around the country in paying particularly close attention to the cost of tuition and its potential impact on future enrollment.
Indian Hills Insight: HLC
In about a month a team made up of academic and student affairs administrators from different colleges and universities will visit Indian Hills Community College to assess the quality of education at IHCC by reviewing documentation and meeting with numerous committees. The visiting team will spend two days familiarizing themselves with all facets of Indian Hills as part of the regular Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accreditation process.
Indian Hills Insight: Aviation
Indian Hills Community College is one of only a handful of colleges in Iowa with formal aviation-related education programs. Indian Hills offers Aviation Pilot Training, Aviation Maintenance and Avionics, all at the IHCC North Campus, located at the Ottumwa airport. There are only two schools in the state that have pilot-training programs.
Indian Hills Insight: 4 Day Week
It was November 1977 when Indian Hills Community College adopted a rather radical new class schedule on a trial basis. Indian Hills pioneered the four-day week among Iowa colleges, taking a cue from some community colleges in Minnesota that had gone to the innovative plan to save money after unusually cold weather the previous winter.
Indian Hills Insight: Mental Health Services
One of the new staff additions at Indian Hills Community College this summer is Laci Morrissey, the college’s new full-time Mental Health Counselor. Morrissey will take the place of a contracted service for mental health needs that IHCC utilized in the past few years.

Indian Hills Insight: Food Pantry
Food insecurity is a growing problem on college campuses nationwide according to Indian Hills Community College Director of Student Life Jamarco Clark. And Clark says, starting this fall, IHCC is going to do something to try and help lessen the problem on its campuses.
Indian Hills Insight: EMS
As Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week is celebrated nationally May 19-25 – the 45th Annual National EMS Week – Joshua Hemminger, the director of EMS programs at Indian Hills Community College, says it’s a perfect time to honor the dedication of those who provide day-to-day lifesaving services, and also remind the public there is a “huge shortage of EMS providers in Iowa and nationwide.”
