Congratulations on your acceptance to Indian Hills Community College! Orientation is the final step to becoming enrolled.
Orientations open two weeks prior to registration for each term. There are two steps for new students when completing orientation:
- Attend an Academic Program/Advising Session
- Complete your Online New Student Orientation in MyHills
You will receive an email on the orientation release date letting you know how to sign up for your academic program/advising session and a link to your online orientation. Students accepted after their term orientation release date will receive their orientation email on the day they are accepted. Find your start term below to see when you will be able to start the orientation process.

Logging into your portals for the first time? Reset your Password
To reset your password, start by logging into your Student Email with the steps below:
1. Go to the Indian Hills website: www.indianhills.edu
2. Click on the envelope icon at the top banner of the webpage to navigate to your student email
3. Use your full student email and your temporary password to login. Your username is typically your firstname_lastname. The format of your Student Email address is firstname_lastname@stu.indianhills.edu. Your temporary password is your Student ID number with an Az after (Example: 0123456Az). Your username and Student ID are both in your Acceptance Email/Letter.
4. Once you are logged into your Student Email, click on your name in the upper right corner and click, "View Account."
5. On the left side menu, click, "Password."
6. You will then be promplted to create a new password.
Your new passowrd must meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least 6 characters in length
- Must include an uppercase and lowercase letter
- Must include one number
This will now be your username & password for WIN, MyHills and your Student Webmail.
Complete your Online Orientation in MyHills
Complete your Online New Student Orientation through MyHills. Students accepted prior to their accepted term's orientation release date will not be able to access their online orientation until the term's orientation is released.
- Open the “MyHills Login” page.
- Type your “Username” and new “Password” in the provided fields.
- Click “Login.”
- Select your New Student Orientation from the “My Courses” module.
- Complete your New Student Orientation.
Sign up for your Academic Advising Appointment or Program Session!
A link to book your appointment/program session will be given to you in your orientation email sent on the orientation release date, if you are accepted after the orientation release date, you will receive your orientation email the day you are accepted.
What is the difference between an academic program session and an advising appointment?
Advising Appointments - These appointments are for students who have been admitted into an Arts and Sciences program or any of our Centerville programs (Except Centerville Nursing). These appointments are typically 1 hour in length and will consist of meeting one-on-one with an academic advisor.
Academic Program Sessions - These sessions are reserved for student admitted into an Ottumwa Advanced Technology programs or Ottumwa Health Sciences programs. These sessions vary in length and are conducted in a group setting.
Orientation FAQ's
I am a current student but switching programs, do I need to attend orientation again?
If you are a current student you are not required to complete the online orientation portion again. However, if you are switching divisions or programs within your division*, you will need to attend your new program’s academic program session or advising appointment.
*Exception: Advanced Technology students switching within the Advanced Technology division are not required to attend another Advanced Technology program session.
I have attended Indian Hills Community College in the past and am returning to complete my degree or start a new program, do I still need to complete New Student Orientation?
Students are considered “returning” and do not need to complete the online orientation portion again if they have attended in the last three years and have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0 with Indian Hills.
If you are switching divisions or programs within your division*, you will need to attend your new program’s academic program session or advising appointment.
*Exception: Advanced Technology students switching within the Advanced Technology division are not required to attend another Advanced Technology program session.
*Exception: If you are accepted into a Health Sciences program you have already been in and did not complete, you are required to contact and meet with your program director in order to complete orientation requirements and register for classes.
I am in a strictly online program, do I need to complete the academic advising/program session portion of orientation?
If you are completing orientation for one of the following programs, you do not need to complete an academic advising/program session, you only need to complete online orientation. Healthcare Documentation Specialist, Health Information Technology, Medical Scribe or Health Unit Coordinator.
If you are in the Arts and Sciences – Online program, you will still need to complete an advising appointment via Zoom. Please use the academic advising link provided to you to select a time to complete your advising appointment remotely.
What should I bring with me to my academic program session or advising appointment?
If you do you not already have your IHCC Student ID, please bring a state-issued photo ID with you to your appointment/sesion.
Can my parents attend orientation with me?
Parents are more than welcome to attend orientation with you but it is not required.
Can my child attend orientation with me?
If it is absolutely necessary to bring your child, you may. However, we recommend that you do not have any distractions during orientation so you can maintain focus on the information provided.
