What is the “Get Connected” Program?

Get Connected is a work-based learning program funded by an Iowa legislature grant. It is designed to link education and business to allow high school students the opportunity to explore various exciting career options through job shadowing and internships. In addition, this program offers educators the opportunity to build and strengthen business relationships through work-site tours, classroom speakers, and externships.

We connect students and educators from Area 15 school districts in Appanoose, Davis, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Mahaska, Monroe, Van Buren, Wapello, and Wayne counties in southeast Iowa looking for career information with area business professionals who are interested in preparing our region's future employees.

Students become more prepared for the local job market, and businesses have the opportunity to mold potential employees, creating a hands-on way for students to explore careers while still in high school.

But, that’s not all. Local job experience is key to keeping our best and brightest here, in Iowa. And the on-the-job learning students receive simply cannot be recreated in a classroom.

Our Goals

  • Expand the knowledge and excitement of students about potential career opportunities
  • Connect businesses and industries with students and teachers
  • Develop a budding workforce to meet the needs of local industry
  • Keep students engaged in school

We all win!

Through career exploration, mentoring, and real-world work experiences, students have a chance to try out jobs that spark their imaginations. Students become more engaged in school, which increases participation and completion rates. Teachers learn what’s out there for students. Business and industry benefit from making connections with students - our up-and-coming workforce - which, in turn, supports economic development and encourages new business growth.
