The Warriors will start their second season of competition in August.
IHCC Soccer Tryouts This Week
(February 26) -- Tryouts for the Indian Hills Community College women's and men's soccer teams will be held this week on the IHCC Ottumwa campus. Anyone interested in trying out for the Warrior women's team should be at the Tom Arnold Net Center on Friday, February 29 at 5:00 pm. Those interested in trying out for the IHCC men's soccer team should be at the Net Center on Saturday, March 1 at 3:00 pm.
The tryouts are for current Indian Hills students and anyone else who would like to be a part of the Indian Hills soccer program next fall.
Warriors Place Two on Women's All-Region Team
(November 7) -- Indian Hills, in its first season of intercollegiate competition, placed two players on the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference's Women's All-Region XI soccer team. Sophomore Kayla Rainey (Ottumwa) and freshman Katie Johnson (Albia) were named to the honorable mention all-region team. The Warriors were 0-8-1 in the program's first season this fall.
Trejo's Hat Trick Gives IHCC First Win
(Willmar, MN) -- Coming from behind with four second-half goals, the Indian Hills men's soccer team notched its first win in the program's history -- a 4-2 victory over Ridgewater College on Thursday. Coach David Schwent's Warriors gave up two goals in the opening half when Ridgewater had a brisk wind at their back. But when the Warriors' offense had the wind in their favor in the second half, Indian Hills took advantage. Jesus Trejo found the back of the net in the 69th minute to get IHCC on the scoreboard. Trejo tied the score about 13 minutes later, then put the Warriors on top with another goal in the 97th minute. Captain Wes McDonald scored an insurance goal a couple minutes later and the Warriors picked up not only their first win ever, but also scored twice as many goals in this game as they had scored all season entering play on Thursday.
Coach Schwent was happy his team kept plugging away after the scoreless first half. "I think a big factor was the wind. When we had the wind behind us in the second half, it gave us a lift. And Trejo's first goal was just what we needed to get our offense going."
Things don't get any easier for the Warriors. They will host No. 5 ranked Marshalltown on Saturday at the Walsh Soccer Complex.
Indian Hills' Women's Soccer Team Nets First Goal, Ties Marshalltown
(Marshalltown) -- The Indian Hills' women's soccer team had a day of firsts on Sunday at Marshalltown as the Warriors finished off a busy weekend with a match against the Tigers. The IHCC women, scoreless through their first three games of the program's existence, scored twice, held a brief second-half lead, and settled for a 2-2 tie with Marshalltown.
Katie Johnson scored the first-ever goal for IHCC in the first half, a goal that tied the game at 1-all. Katie Douglas then put the Warriors on top with a goal 10 minutes into the second half for the Warriors first lead of the season. MCC tied the score at 2 later in the second half and that's the way it ended.
Indian Hills had lost the women's match with Dakota County the day before by a 10-0 score.
The IHCC men had a tough time against the No. 6-ranked Marshalltown men on Sunday. Marshalltown scored the first goal two minutes into the game. But the Warriors quickly answered when Adam Riley scored off a corner kick by Jesus Trejo. The corner kick came after the MCC goalie had deflected a shot by Riley.
But after that it was all Tigers as MCC ran off 17 straight goals on the way to the 18-1 victory.
The MCC men had dropped a 6-1 decision to Dakota County on Saturday in their first of six straight matches on the road.
The Indian Hills teams play at Scott CC on Thursday.
IHCC Men Notch First Goal, But Fall to Ridgewater
(Ottumwa) -- It was a memorable game for the Indian Hills mens soccer team on Wednesday afternoon at the Walsh Soccer Complex. But, unfortunately, the Warriors couldn't make it even more historic. Indian Hills scored their first goal in the third match of the season, but the Warriors dropped a 5-1 decision to Ridgewater College.
Cody Bellon had the honor of netting the first goal in program history for the Warriors. Bellon's first half header, off a feed from Wes McDonald, made the score 2-1. That was the halftime score. Despite having a couple more good scoring chances, the Warriors were turned away after Bellon's score. IHCC had nine shots on goal and a total of 15 shots in all, a vast improvement over the first two matches when they were shut out by Iowa Western and Iowa Central, each by a 15-0 score.
Indian Hills goalie Hector Barrios had 13 saves.
The Warriors will now play their next six matches on the road. Next up is a trip to Dakota County on Saturday. Their next home action will be October 6 when IHCC hosts NIACC.
Rough Start for IHCC Soccer Teams
(Ottumwa) -- The Indian Hills soccer teams got a rather rude introduction to college soccer on Wednesday in the Warriors' first-ever regular season matches. Iowa Western defeated the IHCC women 18-0 and the Reivers also shut out the hosts 15-0.
The Iowa Western women's team is ranked 2nd in the nation and quickly showed why, grabbing a 10-0 halftime lead over the Warriors. IHCC Coach Rod Campbell thought his team showed improvement in the second half, something positive they can take into their next match this weekend.
The Indian Hills men allowed three goals in the first 20 minutes of their match and then the roof caved in. But their coach, David Schwent, also saw some good things his squad was able to do as the match wore on. Captain Wes McDonald had the best scoring chance for Indian Hills on a shot that hit the crossbar from outside the box.
The IHCC teams will head to Fort Dodge this Saturday for a pair of matches against Iowa Central. The women play at 2:00 and the men at 4. Indian Hills returns home to face off against Ridgewater next Wednesday, September 12.
Indian Hills Community College will field men's and women's soccer teams for the first time in the Fall of 2007. The decision was made over the winter to add the soccer teams to the list of the intercollegiate sports offered at IHCC.
The coaches for the respective teams will be David Schwent for the men's squad and Rod Campbell for the women's soccer team.
Schwent has previous soccer coaching experience, having coached the Ottumwa Soccer Club for the U-10, U-12, &-14 and U-19 divisions. He also served on the board as Director of Coaching and is currently the assistant coach for the OHS boys soccer program.
Campbell started the girls soccer program at Centerville High School approximately 10 years ago and still coaches the Redette soccer team. As head of the Centerville recreation department, he coaches the U-19 and U-16 girls club teams and the U-14 boys squad as well.
Both IHCC soccer teams will compete at the Division I level of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
A schedule for the Fall 2007 season should be completed soon.
