Warriors Finish 3rd at National Meet

(May 24) -- Coming off wins in their last three tournaments, the Indian Hills golf team kept that momentum through the opening round of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Huntsville, Alabama this week.  The Warriors led the 23-team field after the first day of the tourney, but a shaky second round dropped IHCC out of the top spot and into a tie for 3rd..  Indian Hills recovered with a much better performance over the next two days and kept their third-place position, improving by three places their finish at the preview meet that was held on the same course last fall.

Midland CC won the national title with a four-round score of 1189.  Scottsdale CC, the defending national champ, was runnerup at 1197.  Indian Hills was three strokes in back of Scottsdale with a tourney total of 1200.  Lon Morris CC was 4th at 1202 and McLennan CC rounded out the top five schools at 1204.  Indian Hills' final round total of 291 was the second-lowest round of the day on Friday and allowed them to hold off Lon Morris for third place.

Indian Hills was led by sophomore Nate Smith who finished in a tie for 13th place.  Smith had rounds of 75, 75, 74 and 77 for a 301 total.  He was one stroke ahead of teammate Chris Dougill.  Dougill led the field after an opening-round 70, two under par over the River Trails Course, and he finished in a tie for 15th.

Freshman Steven McGlynn shot a 79 in the second round, which would have tied  for IHCC's second-best round of the day, but McGlynn signed an incorrect scorecard and his round was thrown out.  McGlynn didn't let that disappointment ruin his week, however, as he came back with rounds of 72 and 70 the final two days.  Had McGlynn's second-round score counted, he would have finished in the top ten.

Another Warrior who rebounded after a tough round was sophomore Jake Weeber.  Weeber had an 81 in the third round, then rebounded with a four-under par 68 the final day for the fourth best round of the entire tourney.  Eric Anfinson, who along with Weeber was playing in his second straight national tournament, rounded out the IHCC scores with a 312, good for a tie for 38th place.

It was the 8th time in the last 10 years that the Indian Hills golf team has finished in the top three at the national tournament.  The Warriors won the Division II national title in 2000 and were runnerup in DII in 2001 and in Division I in 2005.

On to Nationals For IHCC Golfers After District Win

(April 30) -- The Indian Hills golf team knows the next time they compete, things might not look as easy on the scoreboard as they did in the just-concluded   District III meet.  But the Warriors and coach Mike Hagen also know that there's no reason Indian Hills can't play as well as they did in the two-day district tourney played at the par-72 Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg, Nebraska.

The Warriors now have nearly three weeks to get ready for the next meet -- the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Huntsville, Alabama May 20-23.  And they will definitely have some momentum going to Alabama after a dominant performance in the district meet the past two days.  IHCC finished off a 26-stroke win in the district meet on Tuesday, their third straight tournament victory.  Indian Hills increased its lead over runnerup Hutchinson CC over the final 18 holes.  They took a 21-stroke advantage into play and built on the margin with a final round total of 296.  That came on the heels of rounds of 291 and 292 on the first day.  There were only five rounds under 300 for the tourney and IHCC had three of them.

Steven McGlynn put the final touches on a strong month of April with his third straight individual title.  McGlynn was the meet medalist with a score of 213, six strokes ahead of teammate Jake Weeber.  McGlynn followed rounds of one-over par 73 and three-under 69 on Monday with another under-par round (71).  Eric Anfinson finished fifth for Indian Hills with the second-best round of the day for the Warriors, a one-over 73.  So dominating was the Indian Hills performance that all seven golfers who teed it up for the Warriors finished in the top 11.

The district tourney first-place finish came after the Warriors had also won their own Community 1st Credit Union Invitational and the William Jewell Invitational.

Warriors Take Big Lead in District Meet

(April 29) -- The Indian Hills golf team turned in an impressive performance on the first day of the District III meet on Monday in Gothenburg, Nebraska.  After 36 holes, the Warriors hold a 21-stroke lead over the two teams tied for second place and IHCC had six of the top ten scores in the first round.  The district meet is being played at the Wild Horse Golf Club for the second year in a row.  Indian Hills was runnerup in last year's district meet.

Indian Hills had rounds of 291 and 292 for a 583 total, well ahead of Dodge City CC and Hutchinson CC, who are tied for second at 604.  Steven McGlynn, who has been the meet medalist in the last two tournaments in which IHCC has played, led the charge on Monday with an opening round of 73 and a three-under par 69 for the second 18 holes.  McGlynn is just one stroke ahead of teammate Jake Weeber who opened the meet with rounds of one-under 71 and even-par 72.  Andy Weir, playing as an individual, had the third lowest score for Indian Hills with a 145.

Weather Can't Stop IHCC Golfers in Own Invite

(April 20) -- Unfazed by the soggy weather conditions at the Ottumwa Country Club that forced the 36-hole Community 1st Credit Union Spring Invitational into a one-day event, the Indian Hills golf teams ran away with the tournament on Saturday.  It was a long but productive day for the Warrior golfers as the IHCC maroon squad won the invitational and the IHCC gold team held off Kirkwood CC to finish second.

The maroon team had a total of 584 and the gold squad had a 611, one stroke better than Kirkwood.  Monmouth College finished fourth.

Freshman Steven McGlynn continued his strong spring for the Warriors by finishing as the meet medalist with a two-round total of 141.  McGlynn got better as the day went along, shooting a 74 over the first 18 holes and following that up with a 67 in the second round.  He had an eagle on the  par-five 17th hole on his way to the five-under round of 67.  McGlynn edged out teammate Nate Smith for medalist honors.  Smith finished a stroke behind McGlynn after rounds of 70 and 72.
