IHCC Cheer Squad Shines at Camp

(August 28) -- The Indian Hills Community College cheer squad has a lot to cheer about, and the school year is just getting started.  The IHCC squad brought home two trophies, two ribbons, and a spirit stick from the National Cheer Association's collegiate cheer camp held at Iowa State University earlier this month.  The Indian Hills squad also earned a chance to compete in the National Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. next April.

The Warriors cheerleaders took second place in the cheer competition, finishing behind the Drake University cheer squad.  The Indian Hills cheerleaders also picked up a trophy for the most improved team at the camp.  The cheer squad was awarded a red "Excellent" ribbon for its work on chants and a blue "Superior" ribbon for its cheer routine.

During the camp, IHCC cheer coach Cheryl Leffler earned the NCA Coaches & Directors' Credentialing certificate for demonstrating technical knowledge and hands-on training in the field of collegiate cheerleading through active participation in the NCA Training program.  Leffler has also earned safety certification through the American Association of Cheer Coaches and Administrators and the National Spirit Federation.

Members of the Indian Hills cheer squad include Brittany O'Connor of Indianola, Rachel Bronson of Unionville, Andrea Boykin of Bloomfield, Ashley Stewart of Knoxville, Kari Smith of Monroe, Tara Jenkins of Ottumwa, Jaime Munroe of Libertyville, and James Keiper of Fairfield.

Tryouts to complete the cheer squad will be held in September.  The co-ed cheer squad cheers for the Indian Hills men's basketball team and participates in a number of community events during the year.
