From the IHCC Baseball staff...

The basic, overall goal of our program is to have each player realize his maximum potential by meeting the needs of the individual within a team-oriented framework. We sincerely believe that our program is very thorough and enables us to teach sound techniques, to evaluate our personnel, and to condition our players.

This year's staff, headed by Coach Cam Walker, will consist of three members:

In addition to the regular IHCC staff, Rick Mathews has made himself available to the Falcons as a special instructor. Rick is one of the premier teachers in the game and currently is the bullpen coach with the Colorado Rockies, a position he has held for the past three seasons. He is in his 14th year with the Colorado organization.

Coach Walker has a gift for molding a diverse group of personalities into a cohesive unit. He holds daily orientation sessions with his players and encourages two-way communication between his players and the coaching staff. All the IHCC coaches feel that a great deal of individual attention and instruction can be given to the players. Breakdown of fundamentals, videotaping, and one-on-one teaching techniques are utilized, which reinforce the major goal of having the individual player develop to his maximum potential.

The philosophy at IHCC is different from most college and university athletic programs today. Development is the focal point and that is achieved through intensive fall, winter and spring schedules; team and individual instruction; and the availability of outstanding workout facilities for the student-athletes.

The following outline will provide some insight into the program at Indian Hills:

  1. Fall practice - The fall program is an active mixture of intra-squad games, team-oriented activities, specific individualized instruction, physical conditioning, and some outside competition.
    "Fall work breeds spring success."

  2. Our fieldhouse area is large enough to contain a full workout, along with four batting cages plus indoor mounds. Pat Daugherty Stadium, with a seating capacity of 750, press box and restroom facilities, offers the fan and the media an excellent site to view Falcon baseball. Added to this is a clubhouse for the Falcons. Lights have been completed on Pat Daugherty Field and night games are played under Pro Spec lights. The playing surface is in excellent playing condition with one of the finest of total facilities, including an inning-by-inning scoreboard.

  3. Conditioning - Physical development and conditioning are an important part of our program. A carefully supervised weight-training routine specific for baseball is utilized in conjunction with an action running program, "Strength is Confidence." There are excellent weight-training facilities available for conditioning purposes.

  4. Academic environment - Indian Hills maintains a varied and well-rounded academic program. Instructors are very willing to help students develop their academic security, if the student is committed to that goal. In addition, the Success Center employs excellent tutors. Incorporated within this educational sphere is our "Coaching Theory" class, which provides college credit for the "baseball education" of the student-athlete.

  5. Schedule - As a member of Region XI, a portion of our schedule is regional in nature. However, with our increased scheduling, we have definite national experience. Our players have played in a variety of locations, ranging from Wisconsin to Oklahoma. This season we'll be going to Tucson, Ariz., on our spring trip.
The schedule is a very concentrated, pro-like routine with an average of eight to 10 games per week. With the current status of the major league and free-agent draft, the quality junior college program is becoming increasingly important in the framework of professional baseball. We feel our program can give a player very good exposure (our league is well scouted by professional clubs) and provides a pro-like atmosphere in which our players can develop their talents.
Indian Hills has had more players sign pro contracts than any other school in the Midwest since 1970. In the 1994 June major league draft, Indian Hills had eight players taken, more than any other university or college in the nation.
We currently have 11 major league players, 17 players in the minor leagues, and we had pitchers who graduated in 1997 signing for bonuses of six figures. We have placed over 100 players in the minor leagues. In all more than 200 players (26 All-Americans among them) have been selected in the major-league draft.

  6. Financial status - Because of the great success and tradition of our baseball program, we have a solid foundation from which to construct a quality experience. We currently have a number of scholarships available for student-athletes.

In addition, our placement of players has been on a national level. We have placed players in Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, Kentucky, and almost every Midwestern state. The tradition of Indian Hills baseball is second to none in the Midwest.

The Indian Hills Falcons organization is fortunate to have at least one of its former players at the major league level since 1974. Several former Falcons are in the following positions:

Indian Hills can offer players a good community for academic enrichment and baseball development, with an environment where there is a genuine concern for the total welfare of the athlete. We work very hard on fundamentals, aggressive baseball, and with our thorough program, we are a perennially-ranked NJCAA Division I baseball program.

The Indian Hills Falcons were the only team to go to the JUCO World Series back-to-back in 1992 and 1993, and to make return trips in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2004. For the committed player, attending Indian Hills can be a valuable experience in a baseball career.
