Jonathan Mathews is currently in his ninth year as an assistant baseball coach at Indian Hills Community College. Mathews graduated from Centerville High School and went on to play baseball at Indian Hills. In 1992, he played on an Indian Hills team that qualified for the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.
After graduating from Indian Hills with an associate of arts degree, Mathews continued his academic and baseball career at the University of New Orleans. He graduated from UNO in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in economics.
Mathews signed a professional baseball contract with the Colorado Rockies in 1994 and played in the Rockies' organization for two years. He then coached and managed in the Minnesota Twins' minor league system from 1996 to 1999. In all, Mathews spent six years in professional baseball as a player, coach and manager.
Following his stint in professional baseball, Mathews became a volunteer assistant baseball coach at the University of Iowa where he completed his master's degree.
Jonathan comes from a baseball family. His father Rick was a high school baseball coach in Iowa, the head coach of the Indian Hills Falcons for six years, worked in the Kansas City Royals' organization, and is currently the bullpen coach for the National League champion Colorado Rockies.
Jonathan and his wife Amanda are the parents of twins Merrick and Claire.
