Definition of Financial Need

Students are packaged for financial aid (given financial aid from several of the programs for which a student is eligible) based on the student’s financial need. Financial need is determined by a student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) (computed from information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid — FAFSA) as compared to IHCC’s Cost of Attendance (COA). Those who have a positive number remaining after the EFC is subtracted from the Cost of Attendance may qusalify for some need based aid sources. To meet with federal regulations, IHCC defines the neediest students as those whose EFC = 0 (zero).

Awarding Philosophy

Indian Hills awards financial aid based on need. Need–based financial aid reduces barriers to higher education for students and families who could not otherwise afford college costs. This need–based packaging philosophy assures that: Students with similar circumstances are treated equally; and “Need” is the only criteria used to award most undergraduate financial aid.

Financial need is the difference between the Indian Hills budget (estimated cost of attendance) and your expected family contribution: Your expected family contribution (EFC) is determined by the U.S. Department of Education's Central Processing System, using formulas determined by Congress and written into public law. Your own EFC is calculated based on the information you provide in your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Please note: Limited funding is available. If you're eligible for financial aid, your need will be funded by various sources on a first–come, first–served basis, based on fund availability. Read the packaging policy for undergraduate students to learn more about the various ways Indian Hills helps you cover your costs.

Financial Aid Packaging Policy

Award packaging covers your financial need with a mix of different types of financial aid. “Need” is the difference between the Indian Hills Cost of Attendance (your estimated costs) and your expected family contribution, as determined by your FAFSA.

If you're eligible for assistance, your need will be funded by various sources on a first–come, first–served basis, based on fund availability. Funds are distributed in the following sequence:

  1. Scholarships from Indian Hills and outside agencies (if awarding of Federal and State aid is not complete)
  2. Grants Federal Pell Grant Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
  3. Federal Direct Loans (Subsidized, Unsubsidized, Parent PLUS)
  4. Federal Work–Study
