Indian Hills started a softball program on the Centerville campus back in the 1970s and fielded a team on the Ottumwa campus for the first time in the 1988–89 academic year. In the spring season that year, IHCC qualified for the national tournament by winning the state postseason junior college tournament. Two years later, the Warriors started a streak of 15 straight national tourney appearances, a run that lasted through the 2005 season. They made another trip to the NJCAA national tournament in 2010.

The Warrior softball team is one of four Iowa community college teams that play in Division I of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference and is in Region 11 of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Indian Hills plays a fall schedule against both two–year and four–year schools. The Warriors’ spring schedule is made up primarily of opponents from other two–year schools in Iowa and throughout the Midwest. Indian Hills has taken a season–opening trip to the southeastern part of the United States every year for over a decade, in recent years traveling to play in Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama to begin the spring schedule.

Indian Hills has an excellent indoor practice facility, the Tom Arnold Net Center on the Ottumwa Campus, which it utilizes during the winter months in preparation for the spring campaign. Home games are played at the beautiful R. L. Hellyer Field, adjacent to the Tom Arnold Net Center.

There have been 35 softball All–Americans in the program’s history and at least one player has earned NJCAA Academic honors every year since 1992. The Indian Hills softball team has also distinguished itself off the field, having been named an NJCAA Softball All–Academic Team for the past 12 years in a row.
