Athletics

Indian Hills AthleticsIndian Hills Community College offers men and women the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate competition through a wide variety of sports. IHCC has nine athletic teams. The basketball, men's and women's cross country, golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, and volleyball teams are based on the Ottumwa Campus and the baseball squad practices and plays on the Centerville Campus. The cross country and soccer teams were added in 2007.

In past years, Indian Hills has received state and national recognition in these sports. Many athletes from IHCC programs have continued athletic participation at four-year colleges and universities after completing their eligibility at Indian Hills. The college maintains membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and competes as a member of the Iowa Area Community College Athletic Association.

Academic Achievement

Indian Hills Community College had six individuals and five teams included in the annual academic awards handed out by the National Junior College Athletic Association. The IHCC student-athletes who made the 2010-11 NJCAA list for their performances in the classroom include Lucas Brightwell (Des Moines) from the men’s cross country team, Abby Donnolly (Mount Pleasant) from the women’s soccer team, men’s soccer player Benjamin Smiley (Cumming), and three softball players: Kylee Coughlin (Melrose), Morgan Powers (Indianola), and Nicole Steinle (Fort Collins, Col.). Donnolly and Coughlin were honored for their “Superior Academic Achievement” with grade-point averages between 3.80 and 3.99. The awards for Powers, Steinle, Brightwell, and Smiley were for “Exemplary Academic Achievement” for their grade-point averages of between 3.60 and 3.79. The Indian Hills baseball, softball, men’s and women’s cross country, and golf teams were all named NJCAA All-Academic Teams. All five squads had team GPAs above 3.0. The baseball team had the sixth-best team GPA in the nation, among all junior college baseball teams. The IHCC softball squad earned the team academic honor for the 12th year in a row. The men’s cross country team ranked fourth nationally in team GPA. The women’s cross country team tied for 11th. The golf team was 14th.
