IHCC Nursing Programs

The IHCC nursing program has two levels:

Practical Nursing

The Practical Nursing program prepares you to function as a nurse who has the knowledge and skills to utilize the nursing process in the provision of care for individuals, families, or communities with basic health care needs. Upon successful completion of the program and graduation requirements, you will receive a diploma in Practical Nursing and be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). IHCC also offers a part-time, evening practical nursing program.

Associate Degree Nursing

The Associate Degree Nursing program builds on the knowledge and skills gained during Level I and focuses on critical thinking, leadership and advanced nursing skills that are required to manage an acute care clinical area and care for individuals, families or communities with complex health care needs. Upon successful completion of the program and graduation requirements, you will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing (ADN) and be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

Advanced standing students (those who have already completed Level I requirements) are eligible to start the program at the beginning of the fifth term. To qualify for advanced standing, you must meet these requirements:

  1. Graduation from an approved school of practical nursing and/or successful completion of the National Council Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses.
  2. Completion of the following courses with a grade of "C" or above:

IHCC also offers a part-time, evening associate degree nursing program.

Students in the Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs will be required to have a Dependent Adult Abuse, Child Abuse and Criminal Background check prior to beginning the clinical/practicum portion of the program.

Accreditation

IHCC's nursing programs are approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing, Riverpoint Business Park, 400 SW Eighth St. Suite B, Des Moines, IA 50309-4685, (515) 281-3255. The Associate Degree Nursing program has been validated for participation in the Iowa Articulation Plan by the Iowa Board of Nursing.

Practical Nursing - Level I

Nursing program prerequisite - PNN147 Nursing Essentials I or proof of satisfactory completion of a 75-hour Nurse Aide course and listed as current on the Nurse Aide Registry (Iowa Certificate from the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals) or a college transcript indicating completion of a Nurse Aide program.
