Medical Laboratory Technology

Medical Laboratory Technicians are skilled professionals who assist the pathologist in examining for disease by using various chemical and microscopic procedures. The medical laboratory technician adjusts and operates diagnostic equipment, microscopes, and computerized instruments used in the medical laboratory setting.

The Medical Laboratory Technology program is a 21-month program that is offered in a shared agreement with Des Moines Area Community College. This program begins each year in the Fall term. The first year, courses are taught at IHCC and the final two semesters of the program are offered in cooperation with DMACC. Clinical and laboratory experiences are available in the IHCC area. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and are eligible to take the ASCP Board of Registry Certification Examination.

To enroll, complete an IHCC application, take the COMPASS test and submit high school transcripts or GED scores. Testing may be scheduled by calling 641.683.5142 or 800.726.2585, ext. 5142. Students must also submit evidence of a "C" grade or better in one year of high school biology, algebra and chemistry or equivalent (IHCC's Biology & Biology Lab - BIO101/BIO103, Accelerated Basic Algebra - MAT062 or Intermediate Algebra - MAT101, and Introduction to General Chemistry - CHM121).

Students in the Medical Laboratory Technology program will be required to have a Dependent Adult Abuse, Child Abuse and Criminal Background check prior to beginning the clinical/practicum portion of the program.
