Drama at IHCC

Do you want to make a career out of your interest in theater? Or maybe you just enjoy performing for fun. No matter what your level of interest or experience, IHCC has theatrical opportunities for you.

Performing, Technical & Directing Opportunities

Each year students can audition for up to three full productions. Our Acting III students participate in a full production as well. Occasionally, students may choose to direct a one-act play, under the guidance of faculty.

Students can also get hands-on experience in technical aspects of theater, including makeup, set design and construction, costume design and construction, and lighting and sound design and operation.

Drama Excursions

Twice a year a group of students travels to Chicago for Art and Drama Excursions. While in Chicago, students will view a professional theatrical production and visit the Chicago Institute of Art.

Iowa Actors Workshop

Each summer, IHCC hosts the Iowa Actors Workshop, a unique experience for students. The workshop provides practical acting lessons for participants from high school age on up.

Mark Snyder, a Broadway, film, and television director, serves as the workshop instructor. He provides insights into theater as a profession that aspiring performers will find invaluable. Snyder has been working in the theatrical profession for more than 30 years and has trained with Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Uta Hagen. He has also worked with Bob Fosse and has had a number of students who have found great success in film and on stage.

St. John Auditorium, on the Ottumwa campus, is one of the finest performance facilities in southeast Iowa. Recent renovations have included a new light and sound booth, wardrobe and property facilities, and a scene shop.

There's also an outdoor amphitheater behind the Hellyer Student Life Center on the Ottumwa campus.
