What Can My Computer Do for Me?
You've got your computer---now what do you do with it besides turning it on and playing Solitaire? This course is designed to introduce the user to the basic concepts of the computer, the internet, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). You will learn terminology associated with the computer, organize computer files, use the internet to look up tons of information, use Word to create documents, Excel to create worksheets, and PowerPoint to create great presentations and/or photo albums.

ServSafe Certification

ServSafe Course/Testing is designated for foodservice owners, operators, managers and supervisors in order to achieve certification on food safety mandates and requirements. Materials have been developed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. The course fee includes the current edition of ServSafe Essentials, course materials and test. It is mandatory that you pick up the book prior to the class taking place. It is also recommended that you bring your lunch to this class. Note: If you have a group of people who need certification and live in the 10-county area, please call to set up a class in your area.

Coaching Authorization

This class is set up with 12 hours of face to face class time and additional online course work and is designed to enable you to meet the state requirements to make application to the IA Board of Education Examiners for Coaching Authorization.

After successful completion of this course and all the forms (application for coaching authorization, certificates, all background check forms) and the required fees have been sent to the Board of Educational Examiners your application will be processed.   

The background check forms that must be submitted with the Application for Coaching includes a waiver, fingerprint card and fingerprinting instructions, and instruction for criminal history record check procedures. These forms will be provided in class, or can be obtained by contacting the Board of Educational Examiners at 515-281-3483.  Finger printing can be done at your local law enforcement center or at the office of the Board of Educational Examiners. 

 **Indian Hills also offers CPR training** This course meets the coursework and CPR requirement for the state's coaching authorization application.

Industrial Painting Certificate

Indian Hills Community College Industrial Painting Certification is achieved by completing all three courses. Participants will also receive the EPA National Area Source Rule painter training certification. This covers 40CFR Part 63, subpart HHHHHH, National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP): Paint Removing and Miscellaneous Surface Coatings Operations at Area Sources.

Introduction To refinishing - April 16th, 18th. 23rd. 25th. and 30th

This course covers the proper use and safety precautions when working with refinishing equipment, the different types and designs of spray guns and understanding their setup procedures. Compressed air requirements for refinishing. Spray booths and preparation areas. The equipment used for mixing paint and the disposal process. We will also cover the various coatings used for automotive refinishing, how to properly use masking materials and understand the planning and preparation for your next automotive painting project.

Refinishing Methods and Application- May 14th. 16th. 21st. 23rd. and 28th

This course covers an explanation of color perception, Paint mixing, methods for tinting, blending, and application recommendations. Refinishing materials such as primers, sealers, and clear coats will be discussed and their application practiced.  Also included is an explanation and opportunity to apply waterborne refinishing materials.

Detailing and Custom Painting- June 11th. 13th. 18th. 20th. and 25th

This course will show you how to inspect for and identify defects in a paint finish as well as the proper defect removal procedures. Interior and exterior detailing will be covered. Also in this course we will study refinishing technologies and materials used for custom painting.

Basic Welding

During this welding class, participants will have the opportunity to explore the different types of welding applications and how each application might best fit a particular project. There will be hands-on welding, so proper safety equipment is required.

AWS Welding Certification

If you are an experienced welder and would like to move your career to the next level, this is your opportunity.  Indian Hills Community College is now an American Welding Society (AWS) Accredited Test Facility (ATF).  IHCC is now able to perform AWS Welding Certification Testing for welders.  The AWS test will be performed on 3/8 inch steel in 3G and 4G positions. All weld tests are certified to the AWS D1.1 structural welding code.  Contact Amy Hammack, 641-683-5216, to schedule your testing date.  Classes can be set up for up to 4 welders per class. Successful participants will receive a certificate stating they have obtained the AWS Certified Welder status. Classes are held on the North Ottumwa Campus in the Aviation Bldg, room 51 and instructed by J. Hopwood.  Cost $234.00

Conversational Spanish 

 Conversational Spanish is an introductory Spanish course which emphasizes listening comprehension and speaking communication in a variety of topics at a basic level. The course is intended for students with no previous or very little knowledge of the Spanish language. The purpose of this course is to further the students’ conversational skills in Spanish for either professional or personal purposes. In addition to new vocabulary, reading and writing may be done as reinforcement to oral communication skills. This course will provide multiple real-life scenarios where the students will have to show how to apply the concepts learned throughout the course. Students will also be exposed to the culture of some of the Spanish-speaking countries in the world. Take this opportunity to start learning a new language and be able to communicate better with your friends and neighbors.  There will not be class on April 4 due to IHCC spring break.

Trip Inspection 

Pre-Trip Inspection

This course will cover all materials needed to successfully pass both pre-trip and in-cab inspection as required by the DOT for CDL testing. Pre-trip testing is also offered for an additional fee, ask your instructor or contact us for more details.  All classes will meet at Indian Hills North Campus, at the Aviation building, room 30.

Fundamentals of Photonics Workshop
Photonics is the science and technology of light generation, control, and detection. Some say the 21st century will depend on photonics as much as the 20th century depended on electronics. This Fundamentals of Photonics workshop includes an explanation of the nature and properties of light and lasers and optical components. Laser theory and operation along with descriptions of typical laser application examples will be explored. An overview of laser safety will be emphasized. “Hands-on” laser and optics laboratory activities will be included in this workshop. Workshop participants will have a better understanding of photonics technology and the use of photonics in everyday life. This workshop is intended for educators or industry professionals and made possible through funding from a National Science Foundation ATE grant DUE #1400561. One GPAEA recertification credit is available for $35. Limited to 20 participants.

Laser Material Processing Workshop
This Laser Material Processing workshop will include an introduction to light and lasers, laser safety, and laser applications. There will be a focus on the application of lasers in a variety of manufacturing processes. There will be several hands-on laser material processing laboratory activities in etching, cutting, and welding. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear about the utilization of lasers in manufacturing operations from industry representatives. Tours of area companies will be the highlighted. This workshop is intended for educators or industry professionals and made possible through funding from a National Science Foundation ATE grant DUE #1400561. Two GPAEA recertification credits are available for $70. Limited to 12 participants.

Advanced Laser Material Processing Course
This Laser Material Processing course (VOC 3388) is a hybrid, online course that will include an introduction to light & lasers, laser safety, and the study of a variety of laser applications and includes one week of hands-on laser material processing labs with industrial grade equipment. Learning units will include laser welding, marking, cutting, drilling, forming, engraving, cleaning, and micromachining. Attendees will have the opportunity to see demonstrations of lasers in operation and learn about manufacturing processes from industry representatives. Tours of area companies will be included. This course is intended for educators or industry professionals and made possible through funding from a National Science Foundation ATE grant DUE #1400561. Three GPAEA recertification credits are available for $105. Limited to 12 participants.
